Italic is for quotes, nuance or setting a term apart. LinkedIn does not offer it: the editor recreates it with Unicode characters, along with underline and strikethrough.
For a quote, a book title, a foreign word or an inner thought in a story. Italic draws less attention than bold: it nuances rather than shouts.
Strikethrough works well for before/after (“1̶0̶ ̶h̶o̶u̶r̶s̶ 2 hours”). Underline is rarer: keep it for a single word.
Unicode has no italic digits: they stay upright. Underline and strikethrough add an invisible character per letter, which raises the count.
